email addresses not being cloaked was created by

In Joomla 1.7, when joodb displays a database entry that is an email address, the email address is not being cloaked by Joomla's built-in email cloaking plugin.
Is there a way of getting the two to work together - by hacking the code or otherwise?
Ideas welcomed.
